Joining Together
Through Grief

THE STORY OF KINTSUGI

Kintsugi is a deeply rich Japanese philosophy and practice. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Kintsugi 金継ぎ, known as “golden joinery”  in which broken pottery is repaired using a lacquer containing gold powder. Instead of attempting to hide the repair, Kintsugi literally illuminates it.

Kintsugi is practiced with a sense of intention and purpose. Driven by a deep desire to restore and rebuild, the individual gives new life to something precious that had been broken. In this way Kintsugi becomes a metaphor for the process of healing from loss; in essence, experiencing renewal and meaning through mending.

The end result, whether a repaired bowl or a mended heart, pays homage to its history, its story, while also celebrating the revised version as something valuable and beautiful in its own right.

Who we are

About Our Center

The essence of the Kintsugi art form revolves around mending what is broken. Experiences of loss and grief are a reflection of the human condition in those moments when we feel ourselves crumble under the weight of the pain and sorrow.

Kintsugi Grief Center offers hope, providing a pathway for that pain to begin to mend.We recognize the need in our grieving communities, especially in those that are frequently complex, to help facilitate transformative healing journeys. We realize that as life evolves, so does the need for prioritizing and building up community and togetherness. At its core, the mission of our center is to bring healing hearts together, to support each other, and to find meaning through transformation.

Ways to Connect

Our Offerings

  • Support Groups

Each person experiences loss and grief in their own unique way. Our individualized support groups are tailored to reflect the various types of loss, providing an opportunity to connect with others who have experienced a similar loss as yours.

  • Grief Education

Our workshops provide grief education for individuals in care professions, such as community educators and therapists, who may benefit from a deeper understanding of the grief journey, and how to better support those going through it.

  • Community Events

At the very heart of our center is a desire to provide connection and community to those navigating the grieving process. Find support and kinship through social gatherings: supper clubs, grief coffee Sundays, clay and grief art nights, and walks/runs for hope.
